It was Saturday, April 29th, 2017 and it had been a great First Monday weekend with good business and good weather. A month prior, Stephanie Esquivel from a Tyler/Longview TV station came and spoke with me about doing a news story covering First Monday but she really wanted to include The Pie Place and The Burger Stand. Hours later, that story meant nothing at all when The TORNADOS came through!
It started pouring rain with heavy thunder but no one knew what would come. Katie and I left a little early on this particular Sunday and went to Grandmother's where Mom, Fynlie and Rylie were. Soon, we started getting notifications on our phone to take cover. We all huddled up in the hallway with a mattress ready as we kept watching the live weather tracker on facebook. The storms got bad and multiple tornados were in the area. It turned out to be 6 total with 2 being huge and powerful. It was within a quarter of a mile from Grandmother's house where there were homes leveled and massive destruction of trees. We learned a little later, that it went right over Holly and Tony's home. They were huddled up in the bathroom until the first one went over and knew their house was not safe enough for the second one that they were told was coming, so they ran across the field to a distant neighbors house that was still standing and took cover with them. It was a very scary day and we are so very thankful to God for keeping our loved ones safe.
